• International Logistics

Onsite capacity building and training of Pacific utility operators have seen SPS staff work in very remote islands with utility Capex and construction teams. Front line Capacity building is one of the areas that was identified and welcomed by our clients. The skills and training have been wide and varied, including general upper-level project management good practice right through to basic trade and installation skills, including best practice and HSE site management.

Initially, the philosophy was applied to turnkey projects by taking local staff and having them work alongside construction and management on site (learning and mentoring on the front line).

This has now grown to the point where our major clients supply much of the labour and the construction is managed and mentored on the front line/on-site by SPS Project management and engineering personnel. SPS also supplies material/tools procurement and logistics to support and deliver our engineering designs. This ensures all tools and materials from major items down to consumables and test gear are all delivered to site to provide and support seamless construction outcomes.

Mentoring onsite has included:
• LV and HV Cable Routing, installation requirements and the dangers
• Heavy equipment installation including seismic and cyclone specific requirements
• Mechanical fabrication and installation including installation of generation and auxiliary services (fuel systems, Exhaust, cooling and ducting etc.).
• Civil construction supervision and management of powerhouse buildings and equipment specific foundations etc.
• Supervisory Control System installation, training and ongoing management.
• Substation design and safety aspects to ensure the operational personal are safe as well as the public.
• Equipment performance modelling and alarming based on performance metrics to ensure reliable operation of critical baseload plant.
• Commissioning and electrical performance measurements such as protection relay testing, earthing tests, cable insulation resistance tests and full end to end control commissioning
• Project management including Scheduling, project planning, risk management, reporting /site meetings and HSE within the construction site environment including HV installations.
